LOLER, short for the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998, is a UK health and safety law that governs the safe use of lifting equipment. It requires that lifting operations are properly planned, supervised, and carried out safely, and that equipment such as cranes, patient hoists, lifts, and accessories are regularly inspected and maintained to ensure they are fit for use

Under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER 1998), equipment used to lift people must be examined by a competent person at least once every six months.

In healthcare settings, LOLER applies to any equipment used to lift or move patients, as well as the accessories that go with it. This includes patient hoists (mobile, ceiling mounted, and standing aids), slings, spreader bars, and tracks. It also covers other lifting devices such as bath lifts, chair lifts, and any equipment designed to raise or lower people.
